About Kana

Kana Yamada - Japanese certified Architect based in the Comox ValleyKana Yamada – was born and raised in Nagoya City, Japan.

In 1992 Kana graduated from Meijo University with a Bachelor of Engineering and a Major in Architecture. From there she moved to Tokyo to pursue her career in design. For the next four years Kana worked for a major firm called Pacific Consultants, where she completed her certification in Architecture and worked on a variety of public facilities projects such as railway stations and park buildings.

Eventually Kana grew tired of the hussle and bustle of the Tokyo corporate world and decided to take a short career break to explore Canada. Having taught skiing during university in Japan, Kana ended up in Whistler and landed a job as a ski instructor for what she thought would be one season. It was there where she met her husband and ended up immigrating to Canada, working for the Whistler Blackcomb Ski School for the following 8 years.

During the summer months Kana would often go back to Japan working on short term projects for various firms but eventually the beauty of her new landscape began to inspire an interest in sustainable design. This led her to take a few natural building courses and at this time she also began the process of familiarizing herself with Canadian building practices.

In late 2005, Kana & her husband decided to leave Whistler to start a family in the Comox Valley. She wanted to restart her career as an architect but this time focusing on residential west coast homes. Shizen Home Design was born.

Kana has been living in Courtenay ever since. She does still manage to squeeze in a little skiing but for the most part her time is now split between raising her two little girls, Miyuki and Satsuki and drafting or design projects for Shizen.

Growing up in the high density living of Japan, Kana is very adept at making functional use of even the smallest of spaces. She thrives on solving problems and enjoys the puzzle of the perfect layout. She takes on projects of all shapes and sizes, whether a new build or the renovation of a century old house. She has a reputation for paying incredible attention to detail and loves to mix west coast style with a touch of Asian flare.

From our first meeting to the final construction drawings, Kana was able to bring our ideas to physical space and did so with the kind of vision we had hoped for. The design elements of functional , lasting, west coast have all been integrated perfectly. — Rupert & Wai Ling, Courtenay BC

We love our renovations to our 1898 home. it is more efficient and esthetic. We made a few changes to Kana's original design and after living in our house for a few years we have a saying... 'we shouldn't have changed Kana's drawings, she knows best!' — Mike & Christine, Cumberland BC

The shape of our house is cleverly designed. There is a feeling of greater space than we actually have. We have a lot of light coming in through the cupola roof area and it has a great handmade feel inside. — Don & Annie, Courtenay BC
