Kana Yamada - Home Designer
Kana grew up in Nagoya, Japan, completing a degree in engineering and architectural design from Meijo University in 1993. She then went on to complete architectural certification from the Japan Institute of Architects while working for a major firm in Tokyo.
After 4 years designing railway stations and public monuments in the big city, Kana decided to take a year off to become a ski bum in Whistler. There she met her husband and opted to make Canada home for good.
After 8 years teaching skiing in Whistler, Kana moved to the Comox Valley in 2005 to start a family and reignite her career as an architect. This was the start of Shizen Home Design.
Shizen, meaning ‘nature’ in Japanese, represents Kana’s design philosophy well. She has an interest in natural building and sustainable design and always ensures structures are seamlessly integrated into the landscape. Growing up in Japan, where space is limited, she has a keen sense for functionality and efficient use of space. She loves to design west coast style homes with an Asian flare.
